Dark To Light

dark to light

30″x40″ mixed media on canvas

I painted this as the basis of the poster for a Dance Concert: Dark to Light, Death to Life.

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” – John 5:24

The piece depicts a dancer leaping out of darkness and into light. The dancer came from a photograph that I took of my wife dancing on a beach; an expression of freedom. In the depth of the darkness are tentacles representing the sin that entangles us and attempts to keep us bound. The light in the piece is representative of Christ, who is called the “Light” and the “Word” in John chapter 1. If you look closely at the piece, you will see that the beams of light are literally made out of the Word, by embedding pages from the book of John into the canvas. Thus the subject is crossing over from sin and death into life and freedom.
