Painted during Sunday morning worship on the weekend of Project 555. It was one of those moments when we were flowing in the Spirit and He was orchestrating everything. The worship leader couldn’t see what I was painting. He asked the congregation to call out things that Jesus had overcome. It was at that moment that I had just finished painting the words in the lower right of the canvas. Words like pain, anxiety, shame, depression, sickness. A cry of freedom was rising as I painted the words on the top half of the canvas. The worship leader spontaneously began singing about the blood of Jesus, as the red paint from the word Freedom dripped down upon all of those things from which Christ’s blood has set us free.

The theme of the painting was inspired by Isaiah 61:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor. (61:1-3 NIV)
