While at first glance the picture may seem almost whimsical, I believe it is rich with meaning.
It is primarily a picture of abundance. (John 10:10, Isaiah 55:2, Genesis 22:14)
It depicts the Father heart of God to give us all that we want. While it could represent actual food or other physical things, I think it mostly represents things of the Spirit. He wants to bless us with gifts of the Spirit, fruits of the Spirit, and most of all– to fill us with the Holy Spirit! It may also represent the Word of God, which is spiritual food that we can feast upon at any time.
The picture that came to mind was an impoverished boy sitting down to the Thanksgiving dinner of his dreams, or perhaps beyond his dreams (Psalm 23:26 – The poor shall eat and be satisfied). As you can see on the young man’s face, one of the results of this abundance is the fullness of joy.
It’s also a depiction of our identity as sons of God. When the prodigal son came home, the father threw a great feast. As sons, the feast is available to us all day, every day. We are royalty, and He has prepared for us a feast fit for a king.
